Kitsch style
The name of the kitsch style has German roots (K kitsch) and is translated as tasteless or cheap. In the interior, the kitsch style is an expression of the mass culture of the consumer era. It is based on the desire to look richer and more status, using cheap things and materials.
The emergence of kitsch style
Kitsch, as the style of the interior, became well-known recently. It is a representation of the values of the consumer era. Many recognized designers call the style kitsch-pseudo-art, believing that it is nothing more than a mockery of established artistic traditions and established styles. Kitsch is characterized by the presence of two or more styles in the interior at the same time, which can not only not be combined with each other, but even contradict each other.
Such a different kitsch
During the short history of the kitsch style, three main directions have been formed:
– Pseudo-luxury kitsch;
– Poor kitsch (aka lumpen kitsch);
– Designer kitsch.
Pseudo-luxury kitsch
It is easy to recognize by the desire to make the interior at the level of luxury, while using cheap materials. The desire to collect all the best interior items from different styles also leads to the appearance of kitsch, because only in it the neighborhood of high Eastern vases, modern furniture in the art Nouveau style and the classic large marble fireplace is considered the norm.
Kitsch lumpen
This direction of kitsch is distinguished primarily by the negation of established concepts of harmony. At the same time, kitsch lampen is also called the style of the poor – it contains pieces of furniture from different collections, often the walls are simply painted with paint, and instead of a chandelier, a single light bulb hangs from the ceiling. Often the interior in this style is supplemented with items from the grandmother’s attic, converted to modernity. So suitcases turn into tables and chairs, and chests of drawers and cabinets are simply painted in bright colors.
Designer kitsch
Sometimes the interiors in the style of kitsch created by hands of famous designers. This is often an expression of irony over society’s love of cheap trinkets and ever-changing fashion. Artificial gilding, an abundance of ruffles, all sorts of bows, stars and hearts are also direct elements of the kitsch style that designers use in their works to emphasize the lack of taste in modern society.
Colors
Kitsch is characterized by color disharmony. Combine incongruous – the main motto of this style. Red, purple, yellow, pink, blue and green-all these colors can be present in the interior at the same time, complementing, interrupting and at the same time emphasizing each other.
Materials
The choice of materials, like everything in the kitsch style, is limited only by the designer’s imagination. Natural wood and cheap plastic, marble and metal, glass and ceramics – all this can be combined with each other in the most bizarre way.
The unique decor kitsch
Massive velvet curtains, foam columns and gilded bas-reliefs are all elements of the kitsch style. At the same time, the combination of items gives some sentimentality and comfort to the entire interior.
