African style
African style in the interior can rightly be called the most original and exotic. It contains not just traditional elements of life of African residents, it is a symbiosis of natural minimalism and human greatness.
From the history of African style
Despite the fact that the African style is considered to be something unified with its canons and rules, it can not be inscribed in a rigid framework, because it is not limited to one direction. In fact, there are several main schools, the characteristics of which vary depending on the region of origin.
The remoteness of the African continent from the rapidly developing countries of Europe allowed to preserve the authenticity of the local culture until the beginning of the twentieth century. It is during this period that Europeans awaken a thirst for everything new, exotic and unexplored. Peculiar, bright, expressive and a little pretentious African style made a lasting impression on the European population accustomed to less flashy and defiant interiors.
Works of art of African masters admired famous European artists: Matisse, Picasso, Modigliani. Gradually, elements of African style appear in the design of bars, restaurants, hotels and other places of rest, and eventually penetrate into the homes of people, bringing into the house a piece of the mysterious hot continent.
Colors and materials
The color scheme in the African style directly depends on the materials used in the interior. The greatest preference is given to wood of various breeds (the most popular: wenge, sandalwood, mahogany) and stone, which, however, is often replaced by ceramic plates because of their practicality.
Natural animal skins or their imitation are often used as decoration materials. Special attention is also paid to textile design. At the same time, the colors of the fabric are also as close as possible to the natural ones.
As for the color scheme, it is appropriate. The main color is terracotta and sand. Bright accents are often made with yellow, red or orange colors.
Furniture
The furniture, which forms the basis of the interior in the African style, is wooden, heavy and has simple geometric shapes: smooth corners, lack of carving and other decorative elements. In addition to it in the interior can be present lighter wicker furniture, which is made of rattan or palm bark.
Decor
Decorative elements in the interior of the African style is paid special attention. Indispensable are figurines of deities and animals, hand-carved shamanic masks, dishes and a variety of boxes. An integral part of the interior are also animal skins, which are used as a floor covering and as decorative panels or capes for furniture.
Often, in order to simulate the landscape of the Savannah, flowers or real tree branches are used.
Africans themselves in the decoration of their homes can use very exotic elements for the inhabitants of the European continent. This can be the heads or horns of dead animals, tortoise shells, snake and crocodile skin, feathers of birds and even egg shells.
